Provisions within the HECM program to protect non-borrowing spouses have changed over the years, from the original program that offered no protection at all after the death of the borrower, to today’s more robust protections. The uses of the non-borrowing spouse provisions have also changed, particularly since the introduction of the Financial Assessment and LESA options. Counselors need to be prepared to help non-borrowing spouses become fully informed about what this status means for their future. In this webinar, we will discuss what protections non-borrowing spouses receive, and what the limitations and downsides are for them as well.
